Wingwomen Movie Review

Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) directs and stars in Wingwomen, a movie that beautifully portrays female friendships. The film is about expert thieves Carole and Alex, who are tired of their life on the run and recruit feisty Sam (Manon Bresch) for one last job.

The movie is a mix of romance, action, and comedy. Its most charming aspect is the unconditional bonhomie between Carole and Alex.

The Story

Melanie Laurent, who starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Beginners, makes her directorial debut with the Netflix film Wingwoman. Starring Manon Bresch, Adele Exarchopoulos, and Isabelle Adjani, this French film follows two expert thieves who have grown tired of their work. They recruit feisty newcomer Sam to help them with one final job, which will be unlike any other.

Although Wingwomen fails to deliver the same thrills as its predecessors, it does make a strong impression on you. Unconditional bonhomie between the leads is the film’s strongest suit, and it never ceases to entertain you. In fact, the film available on gomovies app also features decent action sequences and a refreshing take on women-only friendships. The only drawback is the lack of a rib-tickling finale.

The Cast

The 2023 French Netflix film Wingwomen tells the story of a professional thief who seeks to retire from her treacherous lifestyle. To that end, she recruits a feisty getaway driver and her best friend to take on one last job. While this sounds a bit like Charlie’s Angels, the heist movie delves into the bonds of friendship in an intriguing and empowering way.

Adele Exarchopoulos and Melanie Laurent star in the movie as Alex and Carole, respectively. Both actresses have a lot of acting experience under their belt. Their chemistry is strong, and they make an excellent duo.

Moreover, the movie has a slew of talented young actors in supporting roles. Among them are Felix Moati, Isabelle Adjani, Philippe Katerine, Leona D’Huy, and Manon Bresch. All of them are known for their work in different movies and television shows. They all play key roles in the movie. Despite its somewhat slow pacing, the heist movie delivers an entertaining ride.

The Director

Melanie Laurent (Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds) has made a name for herself as an actress and director. Now, she’s back in the director’s chair with Netflix’s Wingwomen, a French action movie featuring fearless female thieves.

Tired of life on the run, expert thieves and best friends Carole and Alex recruit feisty car racer Sam to assist them with one last job unlike any they’ve done before. But even if the trio pulls off this ambitious heist, their boss Godmother (Isabelle Adjani) won’t be let them retire.

Laurent’s heist film isn’t perfect; some of its humor doesn’t land and it adds a problematic late twist, but on the whole, it’s easy to watch and has a fun tone. It’s also heartening to see Alex and Carole’s deep friendship, something that’s lacking in far too many contemporary films.

The Rating

Wingwomen is Melanie Laurent’s best directorial effort, and her and Adele Exarchopoulos’ easygoing lived-in chemistry keeps the film afloat as it meanders through its genre trappings. There are fun fight scenes, a tense shootout, and a nailbiting baptism of fire that all add up to an action movie with heart.

Tired of getting into dangerous situations for their work, expert thieves Carole and Alex recruit feisty Sam to help them out with one last job. But with Godmother hunting them down, the pair must pull off a heist unlike any other they’ve ever done. While using familiar tropes doesn’t necessarily spell disaster, this film is weighed down by unnecessary bells and whistles and a problematic late twist.
